Dental Health and Dating: Is Your Smile a Turn-On or Turn-Off?

Couple with good dental health on a date

When it comes to dating, there are so many little things to consider to ensure your success. Even then, chemistry plays a huge part in whether you make it to date number two. If you want the best chance of future romantic success, you need to cover all your bases. In fact, your dental health could be what takes you from a 7 to a perfect 10!

If you want to learn how your oral health could be the “X-factor” you’ve been looking for, continue reading.

First Impressions Matter

Studies like the one performed by Match.com show that a bright, genuine smile instantly makes a person more attractive. In their polling of thousands of users, over 70 percent of them listed “smile” as a turn-on. It’s also listed as one of the first things they notice when meeting a potential partner for the first time. So, the way your teeth look has a big impact on how your date will perceive you—perhaps coloring the rest of the date.

Bad Breath Kills the Mood

Have you ever leaned in for a kiss only to suddenly catch a whiff of something foul? It may not deter you from the first kiss, but it may give you pause to continue. Bad breath can be an instant mood-killer, but it’s also highly preventable. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss nightly to remove food particles that can cause odors. If you’re still not seeing results, add an anti-bacterial mouthwash to your routine!

Confidence Is Key

Confidence is undeniably attractive and one of the key components to presenting yourself as confident is your smile. When you feel good about your teeth, you’re more likely to grin often and engage during your date. On the flip side, if you’re self-conscious about your dental health, you might be hesitant to smile or avoid it altogether. This can send mixed messages to a potential partner, possibly even informing them that you’re not interested.

So, your dental health matters a lot in dating! Your smile is more than just a set of teeth—it’s a partner’s first look at who you are. Do you take care of yourself, or do you lack hygiene? Are you confident or are you not into socializing? These are questions your date will answer subconsciously the first time you smile at them. So, take care of your smile and it will take care of you when it’s time to turn on the romance.
